About the first film

‘They Call Him OG’ released in 2025 as a Telugu-language crime action drama. The film revolves in Bombay in 1993 and follows Ojas Gambheera, a retired gangster who returns after a decade in exile to take on a rising crime lord named Omi Bhau. The film was produced by DVV Entertainment and grossed $35 million at the box office. It ranked ninth among the highest-grossing Indian films of 2025.

The team behind it

Director Sujeeth, who previously made ‘Saaho’, also wrote and directed the first film. He built the character of Ojas Gambheera around Pawan Kalyan’s established screen persona. Composer Thaman S scored the film, marking his fourth collaboration with Kalyan. The music was widely credited as a key driver of the film’s commercial performance.

Production on the original took place around Kalyan’s political duties. He became Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, which required the shoot to work around his government responsibilities.

Pawan Kalyan’s commercial track record

Kalyan’s films have consistently performed well at the box office over the past decade and a half. His 2012 film ‘Gabbar Singh’ was a blockbuster comeback. ‘Attarintiki Daredi’ (2013) became the highest-grossing Telugu film of its time. ‘Vakeel Saab’ (2021) and ‘Bheemla Nayak’ (2022) both posted strong returns during the post-pandemic period.
